What Is a Psychological Diagnostic Assessment?

Psychological assessments often include interviews, standardized measures, and other sources of information to develop a comprehensive understanding of your concerns, strengths, and needs. Depending on the questions being explored, different types of psychological assessment may help clarify whether ADHD, autism, a learning disorder, or other factors may be contributing to your experiences.

At the conclusion of your assessment, you will receive a detailed written report outlining the findings and recommendations. Your assessor will review the results with you and answer your questions, so you can better understand what they mean and consider appropriate next steps.

Why You May Consider a Formal Psychological Assessment?

Sometimes it is difficult to understand why certain challenges keep coming up. You or your child may be working hard but still struggling with attention, learning, organization, communication, or social situations. A comprehensive psychological assessment can help provide a clearer understanding of these difficulties and identify strengths, needs, and appropriate recommendations.

You might consider an assessment if you have noticed:

  • Ongoing difficulties with attention, focus, organization, or completing tasks.
  • Challenges with reading, writing, mathematics, or other areas of learning.
  • Differences in social communication, interaction, or understanding social situations.
  • Strong preferences for routines, difficulty with changes, or differences in sensory experiences.
  • A gap between someone’s abilities and their performance at school, work, or home.
  • Concerns that have been present for some time but have not been fully understood.

These patterns can look different from one setting to another. A child may manage well at school but struggle significantly at home, or an adult may function well in some work situations while finding other demands much more difficult. Understanding these differences across settings is an important part of the assessment process

Frequently Asked Questions

Assessments range from $1,750 for an Adult ADHD Assessment to $3,000 for a Comprehensive Autism Assessment, with Psychoeducational Assessments priced at $2,500. Pricing reflects fair-market rates consistent with the College of Psychologists of New Brunswick’s recommended fee guidelines.

Most assessments involve two or more in-person sessions (autism assessments often take longer), followed by roughly 6 to 8 weeks for your report to be finalized. Most clients can expect the full process, from first appointment to report, to take a couple of months.

No referral is required. You’re welcome to contact our office directly to get started.

A psychoeducational assessment focuses on cognitive ability, academic achievement, attention, social emotional functioning, and executive functioning, the profile behind concerns like ADHD, learning disorders, or giftedness. A comprehensive autism assessment evaluates communication, social interaction, sensory experiences, and repetitive behaviours to determine whether autism spectrum disorder criteria are met, often alongside psychoeducational and ADHD testing for a complete picture.

For more on how autism is assessed and diagnosed, see the Canadian Psychological Association’s Psychology Works Fact Sheet: Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Yes, our reports are written to support accommodation requests at school, work, or post-secondary institutions. We can’t guarantee that every recommendation will be honoured, so we encourage following up with your institution’s accessibility office if needed.

Assessments take place in person at our Miramichi office, where most testing sessions are completed face-to-face. Certain components, your initial consultation (free of charge) and your feedback/debriefing session, can be completed virtually for your convenience. However, full assessments currently require at least some in-person visits.

At this time, assessment services are offered in English only.

We offer Assessment and Diagnosis Processing Sessions for anyone who’d like support working through their results, available any time after your assessment is complete.
