What Is an Autism Assessment?

An autism assessment, also called an autism spectrum assessment, autism testing, or an ASD assessment, is a comprehensive clinical evaluation of social communication, behaviour, sensory experiences, and adaptive functioning, built from a clinical interview, direct observation, and standardized testing, not a quick online quiz.

Autism assessments and ADHD can occur together. Depending on your concerns, an ADHD evaluation or psychoeducational testing may also be appropriate. We’ll discuss whether to include these as part of your assessment.

Signs & Who This Assessment Is For

You don’t need to check every box to wonder if this fits, autism can look different in adults than it does in children and youth. Here’s what New Brunswick adults, and parents of children and youth ages 10 and up, most often notice before reaching out for autism assessments.

These experiences are not specific to autism, but they may be worth discussing if they affect daily life. Whether you’re seeking an assessment for yourself or your child, a free consultation offers an opportunity to explore whether it would be appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, you don’t need a doctor’s referral. You can contact us directly to request an autism assessment.

We currently offer autism assessment services for individuals aged 10 and older, whether that’s a child, a teen, or an adult. We’re not able to assess children younger than 10 at this time.

After your free initial consultation, the assessment itself takes place across two or more in-person sessions. Autism assessments may require additional sessions depending on individual needs. Please allow approximately 6 to 8 weeks after all assessment sessions are completed and required information is received for your full report. Wait times to begin the process can range from about 3 months to a year, depending on availability.

An autism screening usually involves a short questionnaire or checklist to help determine whether further assessment may be appropriate; it does not establish a diagnosis. A full autism assessment explores developmental history and current functioning in greater depth. Clinical interviews, direct observation, and standardized tools inform whether the findings support an autism diagnosis based on DSM-5-TR criteria.

Yes. An ADHD evaluation can be included as part of your autism assessment when appropriate. Psychoeducational testing may also be included depending on your concerns. We’ll discuss the scope of the assessment during your initial consultation.

Your initial consultation and final feedback session can be completed by phone or video. Testing sessions take place in person at our Miramichi office.

An assessment may still provide useful information even if the findings do not support an autism diagnosis. It may identify support needs or areas that warrant further exploration. Your feedback session includes a discussion of the findings, any limitations, and recommendations relevant to you or your child.

Have Questions About Autism Assessments?

If you’re considering an assessment for yourself or your child, our free initial consultation is an opportunity to ask questions and discuss whether it’s appropriate. There’s no obligation to book an assessment afterward.
